His dulcet tones with a whistle in-hand are almost as famous as the mustache he proudly wears on his top lip. But Gary Brickell is more than sounds and sights. He embodies everything that has kept WTA running since 1980. After a quarter of a century as Administrator, Gary is stepping aside.
Since 1993 he’s overseen WTA’s competitions, but Gary Brikell is calling it a day, stepping aside as Administrator. He does insist that we “can’t get rid of him that easily” and he will be staying on to continue his passion, refereeing our valued members each week.
Gary was WTA President between 1989 and 1992 and became a Life Member of WTA in 1996. Gary resumed the role of president in 2001, and has been Administrator since 1993, taking out Southern Suns Administrator of the Year twice, and is a Life Member of Suns.
In 2007, Gary claimed the Rod Wise Medal, for NSW Touch Volunteer of the Year.
In 1995, Gary refereed his 1000th game and followed that up by reaching the 2000 game mark in 2005. This year he officiated his 3000th game- a record which is extremely rare throughout the Touch Football Australia community and is likely to stand for a long time.
Gary has overseen enormous change and diversification in a changing sporting landscape, both locally and within the wider sporting community. He has nurtured referees and been instrumental in unifying a proud Association steeped in history. Wollongong TA would not be the organization it is today, if not for the tireless service given by Gary.
Fellow WTA Life Member Rob Summers is returning to Wollongong Touch Association. After being in the role of Event Manager with New South Wales Touch Association since 1999, Rob re-joins the WTA executive. Rob was WTA President from 1993-1998 and became a Life Member in 1997.
